Adsumus & Holy Spirit Prayers
Prayer keeps the heart and the mind open to all that God is doing and desires for humanity and creation; it also nourishes and conforms the will so that we always seek to desire and act according to God’s will and salvific purpose.

Let Us Call Upon the Guidance of the Holy Spirit
Prayer for the Synod on Synodality:
Adsumus, Sancte Spiritus
Every session of the Second Vatican Council began with the prayer Adsumus Sancte Spirtus,
meaning “We stand before you Holy Spirit.” The official Synod Prayer begins the same way:
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path
nor partiality influence our actions.
Let us find in You our unity
so that we may journey together to eternal life
and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.
All this we ask of You,
who are at work in every place and time,
in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever.
Amen.
Holy Spirit Prayers
Breathe into me Holy Spirit,
that all my thoughts may be holy.
Move in me, Holy Spirit,
that my work, too, may be holy.
Attract my heart, Holy Spirit,
that I may love only what is holy.
Strengthen me, Holy Spirit,
that I may defend all that is holy.
Protect me, Hold Spirit,
that I always may be holy. St. Augustine
Come Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of your faithful
and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit,
and they shall be created.
And you shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
did instruct the hearts of the faithful,
grant that by the same Holy Spirit
we may be truly wise
and ever enjoy his consolations.
Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
